Pioneer Farm: Flint Ingredient Co.
03/01/2013
Flint Ingredient Co. farms are situated on two properties, one homestead inside the city of Flint, Michigan, USA - (1/4 acre) mostly vegetable production with some fruit.
We extend the season on that site using a series of low tunnels. This past season we sold at two neighborhood markets as well directly to several local restaurants and started a small CSA of 3 shares. This summer we were able to purchase 10 acres just outside the city of Flint in Mt Morris and built our first hoop house.
We have several acres tilled with a cover crop, garlic and strawberries planted this fall. Both sites will be utilized next year expanding the CSA and continuing with wholesale and market sales using organic practices.
Flint Ingredient Co. began to help meet the demand for local produce in a community where access to fresh locally grown produce is challenging. With the intention of creating an all season farm the first structure built was a hoop house. The first winter production is focused on salad and other greens. In the next year fruit, forest gardening, chickens and sheep will join a variety of vegetables.
The farm produces vegetables without any chemicals, herbicides and chooses permaculture practices instead. Your support of Flint Ingredient Co. helps create infrastructure on this new and developing permaculture farm. As well as help provide locally produced food in this former industrial community.
